May 18, 2023: Forest Fires in Western BC
While Mistaya and the Wildcat Valley are still under a blanket of snow we are looking forward to a great start to summer hiking season.
Due to a drier than average winter season forest fires have been reported in Western Canada. Mistaya, is located at high elevation in the Canadian Rocky Mountains. The Wildcat valley benefits from natural features such as rocky terrain, glaciers, and bodies of water, which help to reduce the potential impact of fires. We have always had a fire suppression plan to ensure the safety of all visitors and staff.
Although smoke may travel long distances and weather conditions can change rapidly, Mistaya will continue to operate trips throughout the season, with adaptations made as necessary to account for changing conditions. Historically being at higher elevation gives us clearer sky’s than valley bottom.

November 29, 2022: Winter 2023 is opening soon!
Let it snow! Let it snow! Let it snow!
Here are some notes about this coming winter.
This summer Mistaya Lodge and Alpine Helicopters had to continue with our full Covid Protocol, including mandatory mask wearing in the helicopters and indoors where we can not distance. This was due to Covid outbreaks still popping up with out these protocols. (Believe us we tried!) We understand that everyone is done with masking and are willing to take the risk. Unfortunately our staff work for multiple trips in a row, if they get sick then we must shut the lodge down which means it not only wrecks your vacation but it wrecks the vacations of the next few groups. This will be reassessed often, thank you so much for your patience.

Check back closer to Winter 2022 when we will have our webcam up so you can keep an eye on the weather!
The wildfire situation in BC is very serious and we monitor it closely. Mistaya has a standing evacuation protocol for any emergency situation. Alpine Helicopters who we fly with are outstanding. They are trained and equipped for emergency situations. We also have a fire suppression system if there was any chance that it was needed. Being surrounded by glaciers, lakes and up in the rich green alpine with natural barriers we are in a good position.
Right now there are no wildfires in the Mistaya area. There is smoke depending on the winds from the central BC fires. Because of the altitude and the winds up high the conditions change all the time. Mistaya does not generally get smoke settling like it does in the valleys. We have been through smokey summers before and Mistaya was the place to be when the valleys were smoke filled. Of course everything can change in a short time. We at Mistaya will continue to run our trips as long as we deem it safe, smoke or no smoke. Guests are welcome to hike or just relax.
If there are any changes, guests will be contacted right away.
We do give our best to the residents and businesses in central BC that are dealing with these terrible wildfires.
