May 12, 2025: Forest Fires in Western BC

Even though Mistaya Lodge and the Wildcat Valley are currently covered in snow, we are very excited about the upcoming summer hiking season.
Given the drier than usual winter and the reported forest fires in Western Canada, we want to assure you of our location’s natural advantages. Mistaya Lodge is situated at a high elevation within the Canadian Rockies, and the Wildcat Valley features rocky landscapes, glaciers, and water bodies that naturally help minimize the risk of fire impact. Additionally, we have a multi tiered fire suppression plan in place to ensure the safety of all our guests and staff should it be needed.
It’s important to be aware that backcountry trips can experience interruptions due to unforeseen events like wildfires. Please note that Mistaya Lodge cannot be held responsible for any extra expenses incurred due to such uncontrollable circumstances. We strongly recommend that you have comprehensive travel insurance, including coverage for health, cancellation, interruption, and evacuation.
Smoke from distant fires can travel and weather conditions in the mountains can change quickly. Mistaya Lodge intends to run our trips throughout the season and will make necessary adjustments to our itineraries to accommodate any changes in conditions. Historically, our higher elevation tends to provide clearer skies compared to the valley bottoms. We encourage you to check our webcam for the most current views at the lodge. If smoky conditions are predicted and could affect your health, we advise you to contact your travel insurance provider before you begin your trip.
We look forward to welcoming you to Mistaya Lodge this summer.
